Poor baby hamsters

Two days ago, Panda gave birth to 4 babies. I saw it happening actually, and immediately separate Stripey (the father) and Porky (another female hamster). Don't ask me how they got their names. Due to some natural instinct that some animals had, Panda ate one of the babies *gross*

Stripey is the one standing, and Porky is inside the food bowl (as usual)

Just now, i heard a commotion, and saw this :

I don't know who did it. But they are now dead

Goodbye Hamsters

It was a blistering hot day yesterday.

Before we went off to church in the morning, the hamsters were still running about, full of energy. We came home at 2.30pm to discover 2 of the hamsters in the upper aquarium had died.

(The other 2 hamsters in the lower aquarium are ok)

Yes of course the kids cried. The hamsters that died belonged to Stephanie and Josephine. We buried them in a pot of flowers.
We were trying to figure out why the hamsters died. We thought maybe it was sick... but.......

This morning, the 2 living hamsters seem lethargic. When I put in my hand to touch them, the air in the aquarium feels warm to me. It striked me then that it's realy really hot, and that's what killing the hamsters. So, I put the aquarium indoors. The hamsters are ok now .... i hope  :-)

R.I.P s

If you've read my kids blog, you'll know about the hamsters.

Tobias was more than 1 year old, so quite middle-age by hamster-age standard. (Hamsters have a life span of 2 years). When it died last Thursday (12 Nov) Damian cried his heart out.

Two days later, we got 3 new hamsters from Carrefour Sri Petaling. One for Damian, one for Stephanie and one for Jo. They paid for the hamsters themselves out of their allowances. And the next day, not even 24 hours later Jo's new hamster (Jocy) died. Steph's hamster (Casterfur) don't look so good either. Damian's hamster (Arwen) was still ok. Jo and Steph was sad, but not too sad.

So we took Jocy and Casterfur back to the Carrefour. Initially they didn't want to change the hamsters for me, but I made a fuss ;-) so, of course we got our hamsters changed. At the same time, Jeremy wanted his very own hamster, and he bought one (out of his own allowances too). He named it Magic!
So now we have Arwen, Jocy II, Bonnei & Magic! And not forgetting Lucky which is Tobias's son (he's almost 1 year old) Are you following me with all those hamsters' names?

Today ...... Arwen died! (after only 3 days with us) She was from the first batch of 3 hamsters we bought. So I guess the first 3 hamsters were sick. Damian cried like it's the end of the world.

Now I'm worried the other 3 hamsters (Jocy II, Bonnei and Magic) might be sick too!. Don't think I could take any more tears from them!

Super Dog, Poor hamsters

Remember Happy? Our adopted dog? She developed some rashes on her chest (or underbody, or whatever you call that part of a dog's anotomy with the nipples on it?) So we took her to the vet. Allergic to my floor, i think, poor dog. So she was given some medication for the itching. The vet advised us to let the dog wear a t-shirt, so that her claws wont be in direct contact with the skin when she scratch.

That's Jo's old T-shirt. It's one of the Incredible's family - Violet - the girl who can turn invincible. Maybe Happy is wishing to also 'disappear' but she has to bear the 'indignity' of wearing a shirt!

We took her for a walk, and a man commented that she look like superman's dog - Super Dog! Happy growled at him. If dogs could talk, I think Happy said "Say that again man, you're dead meat!" *Growl*

Oh, on a more somber note.... our hamster just gave birth to 6 babies, but they all died!! The mother just cannbalised them . We didn't even get to see the pups alive. There were dead baby hamsters parts all over the tank. (It have birth before we woke up in the morning) Kids were putting on their shoes to go to school when we made the gruesome discovery.

According to http://www.hamster-zone.com/, it’s not at all uncommon to have a mother hamster eat some or all of her litter. There’s no hard and fast reason for why they do this, although some theories exist. For example, first-time mothers may be so shocked by the whole situation that they feel threatened by the new arrivals and simply eat them to remove the threat. Also, first time mothers can produce pups that are undersized or abnormal, thus causing the mother to reject and possibly eat them. Yeeewwww!!!!

By the way, this is our 2nd birthing. The 1st time the mother gave birth to 6 babies, but ate 2 of them. The mother died when her babies was around 2 months old. We gave two babies to my cousin (and they grew up to have 6 more babies!!!. None were eaten!) We kept two, and the female is the one who just gave birth and killed her babies! So sad!
